About the Omarsea Crew
We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

Kids & Kites
Julianna has been asking about kite flying lately. We had some free time and materials lying about so we put this old time kite together. It's just like the ones I could buy as a kid for 15 cents at the drugstore. Two flat pieces of bamboo crossed and lashed securely. Paper from a package we received in a long crumpled sheet. Glue and string to finish the shape and hold the folded paper over the stick and string frame. The whole time we made the kite we were singing "Let's go fly a kite" from Mary Poppins. This was an early test flight as there is no tail. Later we cut the paper in strips. Glued the strips end to end and glued a 20' tail to the kite. It worked so well we were amazed. The design is so light it flies in breezes and so strong it will hold up to 35mph gusts. All except the tail that is. Like a bull whip it snapped about shredding itself here and there. Fluttering like paper leaves in the fall.
