About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

Horticulture Training 101

Today the kids and I received 10 tons of mulch from Metro Central Mulch. The driver showed up at 08:30 dropped the load on the driveway and we began our day. As part of a family project designed to get the boys one of their merit badges through scouts Jean had them order the mulch and layout the work. It was a chilly morning. Well below freezing outside. The mulch was steaming and about 90 degrees. Our project was to lay a four foot wide boarder around the house(except in front of the steps). Starting with newspaper we covered the grass well, laying small amounts of mulch over the paper to keep the breeze from blowing it away. We used a tarp to drag the mulch from the pile to the boarder. The kids were troopers! We worked really hard for nearly 3.5 hours. After covering the boarder with about 3" of  mulch we put the tools away and cleaned up. Stevie raced upstairs for a shower. I have never seen an 11 year old in such a rush to bathe. Anyway, we are working really hard to get the house finished before the upcoming visit by our friends the Kaminski's. We are excited to see them and their son Noah. This year seems to be getting better and better all the time.
