About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

Gear Failures

It must be said that Murphy is definitely a sailor. As we headed South things began to break. The first item was a big SS bolt on the dinghy. It was hoisted on the solar arch and suddenly the back end dropped.  Ben and I were able to lash it securely until we could get to Panama and replace all the SS hardware. Then the Jib sheet chaffed through and began to swing about wildly. I must have made 5 trips to the fore deck at night to fix various things. The Farther South we got the more exciting these trips became. The Bimini frame came apart next. That was an easy fix. Then the stove sprang a leak and I had to rebuild  a valve for one of the burners. The last evening as we approached Panama the Head managed to clog. That one was not an easy fix. I spent the better part of today in a very small space with a very big smell. I need some ice for my G&T. Help!!!!
