About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

Panama Nature Walk

The other night the kids went to the "Jail"just up the street. Now don't get excited Grandma it's not a real jail. It is an abandoned munitions depot that has a colony of fruit bats living inside. They go up there to walk down dark hallways with clouds of bats swarming over their heads. It is definitely a teen thing to do. Ben and I walked up there today in the sunlight and it was creepy enough. It must be a real rush to see it in the dark. You walk down a leaf covered road through a jungle complete with all the Tarzan noise effects around you. Then you enter these underground bunkers made of re-enforced concrete and walk over a layer of guano at least an inch thick. Someone should start a fertilizer company here. The tunnels echo really nicely so it adds to the mega creepy ambiance. This is exactly the kind of thing my sister Tracy, My cousins and I would have done at their ages. Good for you kids!!
