About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

Pacific Crest Trail

My brother in Law Mike Nove set a goal about the same time we did. Only instaed of sailing he chose to walk the 450+ miles of the Pacifi Crest Trail as it winds through Oregons Cascade mountain range. Last week Mike called me to inquire if Ben could join him on an 18 mile segment of the trail that passes just to the West of the Crater Lake Nation park. I was fortunate enough to join these two fine explorers for a two day jaunt through some of the most pristine wilderness here in America. For those who have never seen crater lake it is the remains of what was once Mt. Mazama a huge vocanic peak that exploded 7700 years ago and left a 2000 foot deep hole in the ground now filled with water. The rim drive is a series of spectacular views down into the caldera. This photo from the larryKyoung website shows the lake and Wizard Island.
