About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

House Hunting 101

It is really funny how many homes are marketed. Words like charming and cute should be avoided at all costs. Words like fixer and rehab often mean tear down. I am excited by all these possibilities. There are a great number of choices. But for the most part I am excited to play the game. The entire process of purchasing a home is a game. The players are realtors, bankers, appraisers, inspectors, contractors, consultants, and finaly the sellers.

Having been the seller three times I have seen the back side of the game. But we have always purchased directly from the owner in the past. Never have we had to deal with the additional layer of a realtor in the buying process.

It makes for a tricky choice when deciding how much to pay.

Right now Jean and I are in a bidding war with two other parties over an absolute wreck of a home. It is just a shell on a great piece of property. But winter is comming on fast and this thing needs all manor of rehab before we can think of moving in. It's a huge project to say the least and now is a crazy time in our lives to take something so complicated on.

But yet ...I ask myself ..why not? It has everthing we want and will be a great place to raise kids.

Our friends Dale Proctor and Jeannie Raddatz have looked it over and both think it's a smart project. And Jean has talked about completely rebuilding a classic home for as long as I have known her. Obviously home buying sickness has hit the Tref's.

Stay tuned for the next installment of Insane house hunting!
