About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

Shake Rattle & Roll

3' Blizzards, Hurricanes and what now? Earthquakes?

Jean and I awoke this morning to the house shaking with a very load rumbling sound. As we live near the metro rail line we thought it was a freight train going by. But this was no train. At about 5:04 AM an earthquake occured about a mile from our home. USGS instruments put the quake at around a 3.6 and centered near Germantown MD.

Because the house sits on a stone foundation I was concerned that there may have been damage done. After a careful inspection of the basement I found only a single spot where loose mortar had fallen on the floor. The rest of the foundation checks out fine. This photo shows the rubble on our basement floor from the quake.

  1. I am so glad you didn't get a worse shaking. The only shaking you should get is when you visit and we want to make sure you are really truly here in person!
