About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

Juvenile Osprey Update

Our encounter with a juvenile osprey last week has had a happy ending. After pulling the bird down from the snare of fishing line it was trapped in we were able to cut it free and release it. The Young bird remained at the shore where we released it for nearly a day. Then it flew a shot distance to a "Day Marker" or navigational marker out in the water and there it was fed by it's parents for three more days until it flew back to the nest. This morning I watched as the parents showed the juvenile how to catch fish. One of them swooped down and caught a fish about 14"s long. Flew around the juvenile with the fish and then off by itself to eat it. The young one cried loudly for quite some time as  I am sure it was hungry.  Watching it's mother catch food  without an open invitation to join in on breakfast seemed to be tough love on the parents part.
I can not help but feel connected to these birds now, and look forward to seeing more Osprey in Florida.
