About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

The Impossible Just Happened

The Blog of the Impossible Just Happened

Our trip to Panama started normally enough. As we got out into the ocean out of sight of land and things were going well the waves were calm and the wind was perfect the sea was a bright green. that of course is when things started to go wrong  It was on mine and Juli's watch and we were talking about what we would do once we got to the different places we were going  when suddenly we heard a crash the dingy had flipped sideways!

We called out for dad and hurried to the stern to try and fix it because the other bolt was coming loose and was threatening to break with Dads help we got the dingy secured down and started to look for a problem. And found that the stainless steel bolt that keeps the lines attached to the dingy had rusted through! so we improvised and made a new U-bolt and we went back to watching out for ships commenting on the excitement that just happened and all was peaceful for a few days.

Then the jib came undone and started whipping around flailing like a bullwhip and beating itself to pieces so Dad had to go up on deck to figure what was the matter and it turned out that the he grommet that secures the sail to the line had chafed through the it so we used the slack on the line to fix it . and we Dad came back and we all settled down and watching the sail to make sure that the sail did int chafe through again when we noticed that the bimmeney was moving way to much so we looked at i and found that the NY-lock nuts had started to vibrate loose and threatening to blow the bimmeny overboard so we tighttend them and settled down finally to relax for the rest of the journey

  1. Good job keeping your cool! I'm surprised to hear that stainless steel bolts will rust through! I guess sea water will eat through anything! One adventure after another.... Thanks for posting!
