About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

Train flattens pennies

The kids had heard me tell stories of squashing pennies when I was younger. Now that we have trains in our back yard they wanted to try it as well. Juli's early attempts were thwarted by the shaking of the train knocking the coins off the track. She came up with and brilliant idea to use silly string to stick the penny to the track. That worked well but then she got the idea to use laffy Taffy or scotch tape. The tape and the taffy work very well. But on rainy mornings the taffy works best. This picture from the internet shows the results of a couple of pennys that were flattened or as they now say elongated by the commuter train that Jean rides to work.
