About the Omarsea Crew

We are the Trefethens. After 10 years of planning we decided to sell our home and buy a sailboat. In November 2007 we departed Portland Oregon for the Virgin Islands and our 50 foot sloop the OMARSEA. Our three children Ben, Juli and Steve are enjoying the benefits of being homeschooled. Join us on our continuing adventures as we explore the East coast of America on the way to New Zealand.

This is our neighboring bridge. It spans Knapps Narrows and links Tilghman Isle to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. As you approach it by car, a sign states it is the "busiest bridge in America". I can attest to the number of times it opens. On the weekend it seems to be up, more than it's down. This doesn't seem to phase the locals very much as the pace of life is much slower here.
The kids around here like to freak out the bridge tender though. They wait until the bridge is just going up and then they run and dive through the opening gap in the roadway. It's pretty funny despite being somewhat dangerous, as the bridge is opening for boat traffic. To request an opening you just have to blow the ship's horn one long and one short blast. We always ask the kids to use their conch shell for this task. The bridge tender's really enjoy this novel way of signalling. They respond with a big blast of their own horns.
