Travel update:
Weather always seems to be a favorite topic of conversation around the world. Though it is usually only the sailor who views it as a life or death situation.
We are now watching the offshore weather closely for a window to make our passage to Ft Myers Florida. There are several storms that have developed quickly this year. This weeks tropical depression that formed in the Gulf of Mexico is no exception. As a series of high pressure systems move off the Eastern Seaboard over New England they carry clocking winds. It is those winds that makes our timing critical if we are to avoid being "Headed" by Southerlies or trounced by a Nor Easterly in the Gulf Stream. On the Omarsea we rely on many sources of weather. But, the main model is that of the tropical NGP or "NoGaps" model from the USNavy. A link can be found here on our site to the "Navy Weather" source. The "security certificate" is expired but the data is there all the same. We like to watch the 10 day ten millibar loop that shows the tropical gulf and western Atlantic areas as storms pass over them. Here you can really get a feel for what the next weeks weather is going to be like. I will keep a close eye on the impending storm that is slated to pass us slighly to the East later this week. In particular we will be looking to see what it does to the winds after it leaves the Mid Atlantic area. A couple days of calm weather will be just enough for us to skate down the Bay and cross the Gulf Stream before the next disturbance enters our weather picture.
